PlaceTime.com - URIs for Places and Times
Introduction
PlaceTime.com is intended to be a URI space containing URIs that represent places and times.These URIs can serve as common
identifiers for a wide variety of applications such as genealogical research or calendaring.
The following URI spaces have been specified:
- Instants in the Gregorian calendar
- A URI space that represents instants in time according to the Gregorian calendar.
- Intervals in the Gregorian calendar
- A URI space that represents intervals in time according to the Gregorian calendar.
- Points in the WGS 84 datum
- A URI space that represents geographical points in space according to the WGS 84 datum.
Work is also under way to devise URI spaces for:
- Instants in other calendars such as Julian, Hebrew, Islamic, Chinese and Japanese and in non-civil schemes such as UNIX epoch and Julian Days
- Intervals of time in various calendars.
- Locations specified by latitude, longitude and altitude, place names etc.
- Regions specified by bounding boxes and polygons
- Combinations of place and time URIs to identify events.
A mailing list has been set up to discuss development of the PlaceTime URI spaces.
The source code that runs this service is available under the GPL.
